Hello! (first post)

December 30, 2009

I research and produce written and spoken non-fiction essays related to Alabama, American Studies, family history and more.

In February 2010 University of Alabama Press will release a book I coauthored with Frye Gaillard and Jennifer Lindsey, Alabama’s Civil Rights Trail: An Illustrated Guide to the Cradle of Freedom.

Recently, Encyclopedia of Alabama published my entry for bluesman Jerry Boogie McCain here.

Several of the public radio pieces I have broadcast since 2005 are now available on podcast under the name Janie DeNeefe on WLRH’s Writer’s Corner .

In 2006 I published twelve columns  related to Alabama history and culture as a community columnist for the Huntsville Times.

This blog’s purpose is to pull together published and broadcast work  to make it easy to find and share.  I have no plans to discuss work in progress here but I  do have more in the works including:  slavery and race relations in the history of Alabama’s Episcopal Church, local rock and roll in Huntsville in the 60s and 70s, Alabama in the territorial period, and the life and thought of Harry Toulmin (1766-1823.)
